The big family of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at Maranatha Christian University on April 30, 2024 held the XIX Anniversary event. The event was a celebration of FSRD’s 19th anniversary. All lecturers, staff, and students participated in celebrating the event, some of whom were also involved in the committee. The XIX Anniversary was celebrated festively with the main event being alumni sharing. Then in the evening it was followed by an alumni gathering event attended by FSRD alumni from all study programs and batches.
As a faculty anniversary event, Dies Natalis XIX was also the last celebration under the name of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design. Starting June 1, 2024, FSRD together with the Faculty of Cultural Languages (FBB) merged and changed its name to the Faculty of Humanities and Creative Industries (FHIK). Therefore, the theme of the XIX Anniversary is “New Step for a New Beginning”, which means that the big family of FSRD is ready to step together with FBB to start a new beginning as FHIK.

The background of the joining of the two faculties is due to the vision and expectations of the university leadership that by joining the two faculties (FSRD and FBB) there will be more things that can be collaborated. So that the scientific fields of all study programs in the two faculties are increasingly developing. Cooperation between study programs within the faculty and with external parties is also expected to be more agile and broad when the two faculties merge.
The result of the merger of the two faculties is called the Faculty of Humanities and Creative Industries (FHIK) because after the agreement of the two faculties, a name that is short enough and representative reflects the fields of science of the two faculties is needed. Based on the agreement of both faculties, the Faculty of Language and Culture is represented by ‘humanities’, while the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design is represented by ‘creative industries’. This also reflects the vision of faculty development in the future, which is to produce creative people who have a humanist and cultured spirit as well as an entrepreneurial spirit, so that they are ready to compete fairly in the industrial world, not just good at home.
Indeed, after the announcement of the faculty name change, questions such as, “what will be the activities of students and lecturers?” or “what effect will it have on learning activities?”. Mrs. Isabella Isthipraya Andreas, S.Ds., M.Ds. (Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of FSRD for the period 2020-2024) explained that the merger of faculties actually has more impact on internal managerial at the faculty level as well as on joint study program activities which are usually held at the faculty level. Meanwhile, the managerial system, curriculum, as well as the learning process and activities at the study program level are almost unchanged.
changes. Research of lecturers and students also runs as usual because collaboration between fields of science has often been done since before the faculty merger. Cross-program courses and collaborative courses have also long existed in FSRD. With the merger of faculties, there will be more possibilities for collaboration, especially from study programs under FBB and FSRD, because after joining, they will know each other better and be more accustomed to doing activities together. For example, before the faculty merger there was a collaborative project on building design and branding by students from FSRD study programs, later after the merger it was possible to make a collaborative project in the form of a movie because there were FBB study programs involved. So the knowledge of the study program can be further honed and developed.
With this explanation, lecturers and students do not need to worry about the change. Although the name of the faculty changes, in terms of learning, curriculum and student activities have not changed much. In fact, by joining the two faculties, it provides wider job prospects for graduates in the creative industry, because since college they have been accustomed to collaboration to hone hard skills and soft skills.

Mrs. Isabella added that she hopes that in the future the big family of FBB and FSRD can be united and continue to progress even though each has different habits and fields of science, because there are more similarities and intersections of fields of science that can complement each other if collaborated. Hopefully, all of us can have the same goal of developing the field of science and the creative industry for the good of society and glorifying God, so that all challenges and obstacles can be passed well.
Let’s celebrate the change of our faculty with new spirit and determination!
