Study Smart, Not Hard!
Arif Umar Hamdani , 28 May 2022

As a student, of course, studying is an important thing. In daily life, we may study in a mediocre way, but it will be different if we are in the middle of an exam period. Some students may force themselves to study for hours each day to get good grades.

However, this way of learning is not effective and is very "torturous" to the brain. Dr. Danielle, PhD (2020), says that studying excessively can lead to headaches, a decrease in the quality of learning, to the desire to stop socializing. Scary, huh?

Then, how to study effectively?

In this article, we will explain about efficient ways of studying to avoid the negative effects of over studying. Let's go!

1. Set Realistic Goals

Having great ambition in achieving something is not wrong. However, if the coveted goal has a small probability of achievement, it will certainly be a difficult road to follow. Therefore, as a student, it should be noted that realistic goals are very important.

What does this have to do with poor study? Sure, there is!

When you have expectations that are too high or different from yourself, that becomes a problem. For example, someone who has a talent for language at school, dreams of becoming a veterinarian or someone who is good at math but dreams of becoming a poet. Doesn't make sense, right?

Here, you must identify yourself first, then determine what your goals are. If you are good at arithmetic, but you force yourself to study linguistics, of course it will be in vain. You keep trying and studying hard for something you are not. In the end, you might think that it would be better if you studied arithmetic from scratch instead of linguistics. Therefore, realistic goals are very important, so that your learning method can be effective.

2. Don't Do SKS (Sistem Kebut Semalam)

As the name implies, you do your college assignments or study for a test just the night before the deadline. This term is quite well known among Indonesian students, because many students often use this method. Indeed, students have tons of work to do, but it would be nice if you could manage your time as well as possible so that your study time becomes more effective.

If indeed you have very limited time to prepare for the test, try to study little by little every day until you understand the material. Compared to the SKS method, this way of learning will feel much more effective and the possibility of getting a score above standard is already at hand. This can help avoid lack of sleep at night and getting bad results.

3. Feynman technique

This technique was introduced by Richard Feynman, a genius who won the Nobel prize in 1965. It requires more than one person to do, so you can invite your friends to study.

This technique is divided into 4 methods, with the first method is choosing a topic. Here, you can choose the topic you want and start studying. Next, teach the material to your friends. Do question and answer each other to test the ability to understand the material that has been studied. Well, the next stage is to fill in the weaknesses by correcting each other's mistakes in the 2nd method earlier. The last stage is to simplify your understanding of the material that has been studied, so that when someone asks, you can explain it simply.

This method will be effective if you are someone who likes to study together, because there is an interaction between each other. In addition, you can also practice it directly with other people so that you can do a feedback give-and-takes.

4. Podomoro Technique

Unlike the Feynman technique, this technique prioritizes the individuality of the student. This technique is divided into 5 working methods. What are those?

First, determine the material to be studied. Almost the same as the previous method, we need to know what material to be used. Second, set a timer for up to 25 minutes. Use a timer that sounds, like an alarm clock, so you can "get out" of concentration time. After setting the alarm, of course, you should immediately practice. When you study, don't get hung up on the running timer, but focus on the material you are studying. When the alarm goes off, take a 5 minute break to relax your brain. The last way is to repeat the above methods for 2 to 3 times.

This technique is perfect for those of you who prefer to study alone and away from crowds. Try to practice this technique regularly, so that your way of learning can be of better quality and of course more effective.

OK, those are 4 tips on how to study effectively, efficiently, and of course advantageous for your mental and physical health. Tell me, are you interested in trying one of them?
