On Thursday-Friday (07-08) November 2024, the International Society for the Study of Chinese Overseas (ISSCO) was held at Maranatha Christian University. The activity involved academic experts from various parts of the world who discussed the Chinese Diaspora in Southeast Asia. ISSCO itself is a scientific and non-political professional community for individuals and institutions who are interested and committed to studying the Chinese Diaspora. ISSCO provides facilities for research and scientific publications and organizes and supports national and international conferences organized by educational institutions in various countries. The papers and research results presented come from various academic fields related to the study of the Chinese Diaspora.

On this occasion, Maranatha Christian University hosted ISSCO and was chaired by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Creative Industries (FHIK) Dr. Krismanto Kusbiantoro, S.T., M.T. The background to the implementation of ISSCO in the UK Maranatha because Maranatha has the CCDS (Center for Chinese Diaspora Studies) which is still standing and already has many portfolios that study Chinese culture. With these facilities, Li Minghuan as President of ISSCO 2022-2025 chose the conference to be held in U.K. Maranatha for 3 days (November 7-9) which was held in Thailand the previous year

In her interview, Dr. Christine Claudia Lukman, M.Ds. as the deputy chair of ISSCO 2024 from U.K. Maranatha and also the chair of CCDS stated that she was very happy and proud that Maranatha was chosen to host a prestigious activity like ISSCO and could be a good portfolio for the campus. “We are very grateful that until now CCDS is still active in conducting Chinese studies so that this opportunity does not pass us by.”

The series of ISSCO 2024 activities include a seminar with the theme of Chinese Diaspora in Southeast Asia’s then continued with parallel session activities and finally on the third day, November 9, a Bandung City Tour was held to several famous places in Bandung City, including the Nu Art Gallery, Gedung Sate and Museum, Braga Street, Gedung Merdeka, Vihara Satya Budhi and Gedung Karuhun.

At the closing remarks, the ISSCO flag was handed over from the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Creative Industries (FHIK) Dr. Krismanto Kusbiantoro, S.T., M.T. to the Dean of the Faculty of Letters and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Danny Wong Tze Ken, in addition to the exchange of Indonesian and Malaysian flags which means that ISSCO 2025 will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, precisely at the Universiti Malaya on November 4-5, 2025. Therefore, let’s wait for the next ISSCO implementation!
